When describing the damage and severity of a sewage back up, three categories are used 

Category 1 or Clean Wateris water that comes from a clean source such as a faucet or clean water supply line. If left unattended this type of water can quickly move to a category 2 or 3.

Category 2 or Gray Watermay contain bacteria and would cause illness or discomfort if digested.

Category 3 or Black Water is extremely unsanitary and can cause death or severe illness if ingested. This type of water comes from the toilet bowl with feces or water from beyond the toilet trap.
