The Difference Between a CAT 1, CAT 2, AND CAT 3 Water Loss
8/16/2022 (Permalink)
CAT I
A category I loss is when the water is coming from a clean water source and will not cause harm if inhaled or ingested. Examples of this would be a broken supply line or a tub overflow.
CAT II
A category II loss is when the water poses a minimum threat. For example, a toilet overflow with only urine or a dishwasher overflow.
CAT III
A category III loss involves water that is highly contaminated and may contain pathogenic, toxigenic, or other harmful agents. For example, water containing silt, pesticides, toxic organic substances, or metals, are all CAT III losses.
SERVPRO Professionals are highly trained for any category of water loss you may have. Our team is ready and available day or night, 24/7.

Does your Lapeer County Home or Business Have a Mold Problem?
11/4/2021 (Permalink)
Commercial- Does your NW Genesee Home Have a Mold Problem
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
• Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
• Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
• Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce health effects.
• Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
• Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
• Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

What Happens when Water Gets Under your Ceramic Tile?
6/8/2021 (Permalink)
Tile can withstand small quantities of water but if your home has been flooded and you are thinking of leaving the effected tile untouched, there are a few important things you should know. Water that has found its way under ceramic tile can cause mold growth. If that mold is not taken care of it can become very dangerous. Mold spores can lead to health effects and will eventually compromise the structure of the tile itself.
This is where your insurance company steps in and tells you to call SERVPRO of Lapeer. Our trained professionals will come in, access all damage and identify potential future problems that you may not have even known to check for. Our Project Manager will work directly with you and your insurance adjuster to repair or replace all damaged areas.

What to Look for as Businesses Reopen
5/29/2020 (Permalink)
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the definition of clean and has 89% of consumers nervous about returning to the retail world.
SERVPRO cleaning specialist in Flint, recommends paying attention to four key things as businesses reopen.
1. Look for "signs" of clean
When you first walk into the building you should immediately look for signs that the space has been cleaned recently. A clean space will be free of visible dirt and trash. Fingerprints in high traffic areas are a good sign that cleaning is not high priority. Standalone sanitation stations are a good sign that disinfecting is a priority. Many businesses are also hanging signage to remind guests to use proper social distancing protocols.
2. What adjustments have staff made?
Everyone has a responsibility to stop the spread of coronavirus. The staff of retail businesses, restaurants, or community centers should be properly trained in CDC-approved cleaning methods. If employees are not using proper techniques or products, it might be due to a lack of proper training. Look for staff who are wearing gloves and masks and are practicing safe distancing when interacting with customers.
3. What adjustment has the business made to the physical space?
Many businesses and facilities have made physical changed to their buildings to help reduce the risk of spreading illness. The business may adjust to traffic flow of patrons to prevent congested areas. Contactless point-of-sale are becoming more common, and many businesses are constructing barriers between employees and guests. Some have even added markers on the floor to indicate the safe 6-feet distance. One good way to help prevent the spread of infection is to reduce the number of touch points, such as propping doors open and opening windows to increase airflow. Some of the businesses are going a step further and reducing the number of customers allowed inside the space at one time.
4. Does it look like " business as usual?"
in the same way that the country changed following 9/11, what we once knew as "normal" may change forever. If a facility is still operating gin the way it did before the coronavirus pandemic, there is a good chance the managers or staff are not taking the illness seriously and are not prioritizing the health of their employees and guests. many have reduced there hours of operation or offered times when they are open only for at-risk individuals, such as senior citizens or those who are immune-compromised. Before stepping out of your door, check the company's social media pages or their website for communications about their hours and the steps they are taking to protect patrons. These locations should be following federal, state, and local mandates with regard to safety.
Reopening America requires all of us to move forward together by practicing social distancing and other daily habits to help reduce the risk of exposure to the coronavirus.
SERVPRO specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup, and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it "Like it never even happened," for both commercial and residential customers.

How to Reduce Your Heating Bill With Winter
11/6/2019 (Permalink)
Keep Your Furnace System Clean
SERVPRO of Lapeer is not just a restoration company. We specialize in cleaning as well. If your furnace gets dirty it has to work extra hard, using extra power and possibly still performing less than a clean unit would. Our specialists can come out and properly clean your duct system and evaluate the dirt buildup on your blower blades. Excessive build up on your blades can severely decrease efficiency.
Check your Homes Insulation
Insulation in the walls of your attic actually play a big part in keeping your home warm. Allot of cool air can be trapped up there, causing the furnace to work double time to heat your house. Make sure that the vents in your attic are clear so air can easily flow where it is needed.
What you Should Know about Sewage Backup
10/4/2019 (Permalink)
All sewage backups are an emergency and should be treated as such. The water may contain viruses and bacteria that can make you sick. SERVPRO of Lapeer has trained professionals who come in to your home ready to quickly and efficiently take care of the problem.
When describing the damage and severity of a sewage back up, three categories are used
Category 1 or Clean Wateris water that comes from a clean source such as a faucet or clean water supply line. If left unattended this type of water can quickly move to a category 2 or 3.
Category 2 or Gray Watermay contain bacteria and would cause illness or discomfort if digested.
Category 3 or Black Water is extremely unsanitary and can cause death or severe illness if ingested. This type of water comes from the toilet bowl with feces or water from beyond the toilet trap.

Commercial Water Damage
5/29/2019 (Permalink)
We all get very busy with our day to day schedules and water damage can really put a wrench in your plans. As inconvenient and time consuming as it may be, leaving water damage for even 1 day can make things significantly worse.
Within Minutes water will spread throughout your property soaking into drywall, upholstery and other belongings.
Within the first 24 hours drywall will spread and break, metal surfaces begin to tarnish and a musty odor becomes present.
Within 48 hours to a week mold and mildew grow and spread, paint blisters, wood flooring swells and doors and windows swell and warp.
After 1 week of being untreated, the time and money needed for restoration significantly increase and the home or business may no longer be structurally sound.
If you travel south for the winter have a friend or family member check on your home every few days and if your business has a basement be sure to check it regularly.
Disinfecting Clean: Biohazard Job
8/15/2018 (Permalink)
A few weeks ago, we received a call from a company in need of a disinfecting clean. A physical Therapy Company recently learned that one of their patients was diagnosed with C-diff Colitis, a highly contagious bacterial infection that typically resides in the colon. Their facility was shut down directly after receiving the news. We received the call shortly after 4:00 PM and started mobilizing our staff. This was an all hands-on deck situation, as the business needed to reopen the next day. Our staff quickly packed their vehicles, grabbed the proper Personal Protection Equipment and hit the road.
Upon arrival, the crew visited the neighboring store to get the key to the building. Given the nature of the job, prior to entering the building, our crew needed to put on a full Tyvek suit and full-face respirator to ensure that they could safely clean the facility. Our crew knocked that cleaning job out in just 2 hours and the company was able to reopen the next day with their mind at ease.
Massive Warehouse Cleaning
5/21/2018 (Permalink)
Kitchen in the office section after our staff finished cleaning it.
A few weeks ago, our team completed a 75,000 square foot general cleaning job. The current owner of the building was looking to sell but was unable to do so due to the amount of black carbon dust in the building. It seemed to cover every inch of the building. It didn’t seem to matter if you were in the main office or out in the warehouse, the thickness of the dust remained the same.
In the warehouse portion of the building, we had to rent a Zamboni to clean the floor due to the dust and the surface area being covered. To see a difference in the flooring, we had to clean the floor 2-3 times. Thank goodness for the Zamboni! On the other side of the warehouse, there were 30+ racks that needed to be wiped down and the floor cleaned under. It took us several days to complete these tasks, but the warehouse looks amazing!
On the inside of the building, the carpets were covered in dirt and dust. Due to foot traffic, it was all stomped into the ground. The walls, lights and walls were all covered in carbon dust and needed to be cleaned prior to the floors being done. The bathrooms were destroyed and blackened with carbon dust, more so than any other room in the building. The kitchen was neglected, and every inch of the cupboards and appliances needed to be cleaned. Using SERVPRO cleaning products and a lot of arm muscle, the office portion is now sparkling!
In the end, we were able to clean this warehouse in just over 2 weeks. The owner will hopefully have no problems selling with warehouse and the new owners will be able to move in with confidence!
Sump Pump Failure leads to Flooding Issues
5/7/2018 (Permalink)
The Utility room was continuously flooding throughout the day, until we arrived.
On April 19th, we received a water loss at a commercial site in the Goodrich area. What we thought was a standard category 1 water loss, was actually a category 3. Over the weekend, they lost power in an ice storm and their sump pump failed, causing the toilets to overflow and flood the building. The employees attempted to clean the water up themselves, but quickly learned that it was a much bigger job than they were equipped to handle on their own and called us.
Upon our Production Manager, Darren arriving on site and conducting our initial surveillance, we learned that there was little to no moisture in the walls. The flooring was not so lucky. After conducting several moisture reading tests throughout the effected areas, we learned that all of the flooring, approximately 500 sqft, will have to be removed.
Later that day, our crew arrived on site to start demoing the effected area. This demo included: The main hallway, 7 rooms and 4 bathrooms. All flooring was removed, and two feet of drywall and insulation from the floor up. Air movers were strategically placed to produce the most desirable air flow and the most efficient drying process. Furthermore, dehumidifiers were used to assist the air movers in their task.
In the end, we have another happy customer and a commercial property that is back up and running as if it “Never even happened.”
